Josh Lane is an American designer and illustrator. As a self-described
‘geek’, Lane has combined his love for pop culture with the styles attributed
to Egyptian art and hieroglyph. (Butler, 2014) His “Hero-glyph” art
series has been met with acclaim. Pop-culture heroes such as Iron Man and the
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are depicted in poses that mirror the mathematically
based images seen in Egyptian art. Elongated body structures and hierarchical scale are used to describe context, in conjunction with storytelling done in
hieroglyph.
Lane’s inspiration for the series actually came from his own misreading
of an article that he was reading about Egyptian art, "I was reading an
article on some ancient art and read ‘hieroglyphics’ as ‘heroglyphics.’ I
immediately started day-dreaming about which possible heroes would find
themselves in the past," (Rhodes,
2104)
